History

Wimbledon and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) have a long-standing relationship dating back to 1888, when the governing body was formed after the All England Lawn Tennis Club passed over the guardianship of the national game.

The relationship still continues today, and funds generated by The Championships are used by the LTA to get more people playing tennis, more often.

Get Involved

There are currently 23,000 tennis courts across Great Britain and a whopping 5 million people who play tennis at least once a year!

The LTA provides plenty of opportunities to get involved. Whether you’ve never picked up a racket before, are a seasoned regular, or love to watch courtside - there’s something for everyone.

British Tennis Membership is a great way to get started. Team Members receive a wide range of exclusive benefits, including priority access to tickets for LTA summer tournaments and Davis Cup ties, £250 of physiotherapy and opportunities to win money can’t buy experiences. So far this year, lucky winners have quizzed Stan Wawrinka at The Queen’s Club, got on court with Jamie Murray, jetted off to the US Open, and enjoyed the red carpet treatment at the Borg vs. McEnroe premiere in London.

Get on court at The Championships

If you’re feeling inspired to get on court during your visit to the The Championships, head over to the Play Tennis Zone near Court 12. There are activities for all ages including interactive tennis games and competitions to win great prizes.

There are also friendly staff available to answer your questions and chat to you about how to get involved in tennis outside of Wimbledon.

Pre-Wimbledon Grass Court Tournaments

The LTA’s summer tournaments mark the start of the British grass court season, when the world’s best come off the clay and start their preparations for The Championships, Wimbledon. In 2017, the events welcomed some of the biggest names in men’s and women’s tennis and continued to provide fans with ideal opportunities to see world-class players in action.

Tickets are now available for the 2018 events, so don’t miss your chance to book your seats early and play your part in the build-up to next year’s Championships, Wimbledon.

2018 Open Nottingham | 9-17 June

In 2018, The Open Nottingham will see top international women’s and men’s tennis come together once again to grace the pristine courts of the Nottingham Tennis Centre for one week of explosive action.
The WTA International and men’s ATP Challenger event gives tennis fans the chance to see top male and female players in action across the same week.

Led by Britain’s Johanna Konta, 2017 saw some of the game’s biggest names take to the grass courts of the East Midlands and next year it promises to be even better as the tournament goes from strength to strength.

2018 Fever-Tree Championships | 16-24 June

2017 brought with it the strongest field in The Queen’s Club history and one of the most unpredictable events on the venue’s hallowed grass courts.

Names such as defending champion Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, and Milos Raonic made for a fearsome line-up of talent, but it was the year of the upset in Barons Court as a host of top seeds fell in the opening round.

Queen’s Club veteran and crowd favourite Feliciano Lopez would go on to lift the trophy after a tense final with 2012 winner Marin Cilic, with the biggest-ever Queen’s crowd cheering a vintage year for the tournament.

2018 Classic Birmingham | 16-24 June

A star-studded line up of Grand Slam champions and inspiring Brits took to the grass of the Edgbaston Priory Club in 2017 and next summer things promise to be even better.

With the likes of Garbine Muguruza, Petra Kvitova, and Johanna Konta making their marks at The Classic Birmingham, fans were treated to some of the best grass court action up close and personal.

2018 promises to be no different as the stars of women’s tennis finalise their grass court preparations at the prestigious WTA Premier level tournament.

2018 International Eastbourne | 22-30 June

2017 saw a return of the men in Eastbourne as the ATP 250 event combined with the WTA Premier field for yet another year of sold-out tennis on the South Coast.

Stars such as Novak Djokovic and Gael Monfils made for a highly-competitive men’s event, while the women’s tournament was graced by the likes of Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep, and Johanna Konta.

Next summer will bring more thrilling action to the historic Devonshire Park in the final tournament before the world’s best head to London for The Championships, Wimbledon.
