Master Plan

The Wimbledon Master Plan sets out the All England Club's vision for the future of the Club’s grounds and is a framework against which new development will be assessed and refined.

Key objectives 

- Maintain The Championships as the premier tennis tournament in the world and on grass.

One of the first projects identified by the Master Plan was the opportunity to improve No.1 Court by installing a new fixed and retractable roof.

The retractable roof will, just like Centre Court, allow for uninterrupted play irrespective of the weather thereby guaranteeing tennis for around 27,000 spectators on the two main Show Courts. 

The remodelling of No.1 Court will also provide the opportunity to achieve further improvements to the visitor experience through:

- new wider, more comfortable seating throughout the Court

- two additional tiers of approximately 900 seats

- the creation of a new two-level public plaza in place of Court 19

- improved on-site concessions and catering areas around the Court

- hospitality facilities to replace some of the temporary facilities currently in use at the south of the Grounds

Consultation with local residents and the public

The conceptual Wimbledon Master Plan has been evolving since late 2011 and on the 23 April 2013 the preliminary plans were announced publicly at a press conference. 

Leading up to this, a summary document of the Master Plan was issued to Merton Council on 27 March 2013. 

The presentation to local residents was held on 23 April, outlining the vision and objectives of the Master Plan. Considerable interest from local residents resulted and it was decided to hold three additional workshop meetings to allow local residents the benefit of smaller audiences in which to be able to raise questions and discuss the proposals, and for the AELTC to receive their feedback. These workshops were held on 23 May, 29 May and 11 June.

In addition, on 31 March 2014 and 1 April 2014, a public exhibition of Master Plan materials was held at the AELTC and at Wimbledon's Centre Court shopping centre.
