Storylines and stats from Day 3
Roger Federer brings the Marcus Willis fairytale to an end under the Centre Court roof READ MORE

While tennis fans continued the wait for the English summer to finally make an appearance, Agnieszka Radwanska, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Belinda Bencic and Eugenie Bouchard were all thankful for the Centre Court roof on Wednesday.

All five enjoyed the luxury of completing matches without the inconvenience of rain delays – with Federer’s win over qualifier and world No.772 Marcus Willis taking top billing.

While Willis waved goodbye to Wimbledon, British No.16 seed Johanna Konta lived up to her billing on No.1 Court with a fine win over the in-form Monica Puig. Konta – the first Briton to be seeded in the ladies draw since Jo Durie in 1984 – was too focussed and consistent for Puig during a 6-1, 7-5 passage.

Elsewhere, on another day cut short by bad weather, two-time champion Petra Kvitova was in a hurry as she dropped just four games on her way past Sorana Cirstea.

Talk of the ATP Tour this season, Austria’s Dominic Thiem, was another to go through when he got revenge over tricky German Florian Mayer 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 - the man who’d beaten him in Halle just days before The Championships.

And there were significant held-over first round wins for No.10 seed Tomas Berdych, No.19 seed Bernard Tomic, No.24 seed Alexander Zverev, No.32 seed Andrea Petkovic and No.21 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

 Day 3 in numbers

Next Wednesday might be quite different

- Marcus Willis
  • Djokovic notched up his 30th consecutive Grand Slam match win. His last defeat at a major came against Stan Wawrinka in Paris in June 2015
  • That run takes the Serb to third in the all-time list of most consecutive victories at a major – only Don Budge (37) and Rod Laver (31) are ahead of him
  • Kvitova took just 15 minutes to win the first set against Cirstea – and dropped only four points in the process
  • Federer has still lost only one Tour-level match to a player ranked outside the top 200 in his career – then-world No.249 Sergi Bruguera in Barcelona in 2000
  • Federer’s victory moved him to a 304-50 win-loss record at Grand Slams, just two victories short of Martina Navratilova’s 306-49 all-time best
  • It was Federer’s 1,321st Tour-level match of his career. It was Willis’ 2nd
  • Federer’s passage into round three took him to a career 81-10 win-loss record at Wimbledon – one better than Serena Williams on 80-10
  • With victory over Kozlova, Radwanska’s first round record at Wimbledon improved to 22 sets played, 22 sets won
  • Konta hit her fastest ever serve at Wimbledon on Wednesday - a 111mph delivery
