Czech left-hander Jiri Vesely is proving to be a man for the big occasion after he produced one of his most impressive performances to beat in-form Austrian Dominic Thiem 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 7-6(3).
The world No.64 – a former junior world No.1 – produced the better tennis when it mattered to send the No.8 seed crashing out on Day 4.
It is Vesely’s second big win of the season after the 22-year-old shocked world No.1 Novak Djokovic at the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 in April.
Thiem has been one of the breakthrough stars of the ATP World Tour in 2016. He has won four titles - including the recent grass-court Stuttgart event - and before that made the semi-finals at Roland Garros.
The victory moves Vesely into the third round where he’ll take on Portugal’s Joao Sousa for a place in the last 16.
