American Sam Querrey delivered the biggest shock of the tournament – and indeed of men’s tennis for over a year – when he completed a held-over four-set victory over defending champion Novak Djokovic on Saturday.

The world No.41 held his nerve admirably to put the finishing touches to a 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(5) scoreline that ended Djokovic’s dreams of a calendar Grand Slam.

“It’s incredible to do it here at Wimbledon, the biggest tournament in the world,” Querrey told the BBC afterwards. “I’m so ecstatic right now. I played the break points well, kept delivering the big serves, and I fought hard in the tie-break. I’m so happy.”

While SW19 came to terms with one of the biggest surprises in the tournament’s history, No.2 seed Andy Murray went about his business with the minimum fuss, seeing off Australian John Millman in straight sets.

The Championships did lose another former champion, however, when two-time winner Petra Kvitova crashed out in straight sets to Ekaterina Makarova 7-5, 7-6(5).

There were no hiccups for some of the other top seeds, though, with Bernard TomicMilos Raonic, Kei Nishikori, Marin Cilic, Alexander Zverev and Steve Johnson moving through in the men’s draw.

No.3 seed Agnieszka Radwanska, No.4 seed Angelique Kerber, No.5 seed Simona Halep, Timea Bacsinszky, Sloane Stephens and Lucie Safarova all progressed in the ladies’ singles.

Day 6 in numbers

  • Only one of the nine former girls’ singles champions that started in the ladies’ draw remains - Radwanska
  • Querrey was one of 24 players in the men’s draw to have won a grass title when the tournament began – he won at Queen’s in 2010
  • Murray now holds an 18-0 Tour-level career record against Australians
  • Murray is through to the round of 16 for the 22nd consecutive Grand Slam
  • Murray moves to 49 Wimbledon match wins. That puts him joint-eighth in the all-time list alongside Stefan Edberg and Goran Ivanisevic
  • Raonic blasted this year’s fastest serve of the Championships on Saturday – a 143mph delivery against Jack Sock
  • Radu Albot and Tomic have delivered the longest point of the tournament so far – 39 strokes during their second round meeting
