After play resumed on No.1 Court following rain delaying play yet again at the critical juncture of being 5-6 down in the fourth set and trailing by one set to two, the men’s singles champion Novak Djokovic went out to the No.28 seed, Sam Querrey, in the third round.
We heard the crowd roar in reaction a split second before we saw the dramatic denouement unfold on the TV screen here in the forecast centre.
It wasn’t a Championships final but it’s the sort of thing you can say "I was there."
To me it seemed that Querrey — 10cm the taller man— had the vital capacity to remain composed and easy in his skin while confronting an opponent and champion as mentally flinty as Djokovic.
In a completely different league, we had the mild shock earlier of discovering we are all in for the middle Sunday, so the Championships can catch up on matches after rain delays for the last three days in a row.
It’s no hardship especially as the forecasters are saying it should be a fine day.
I am particularly looking forward to watching the doubles. I enjoy the speed, the need for razor-sharp reactions, the need to be fearless.
I might even manage to get out and watch it courtside in the sunshine.
