Britain’s most successful US Open for 47 years in terms of the number of singles players who reached the second week prompted an inevitable spate of questions about British performances at previous Grand Slam tournaments.

To find a year when more than three Britons reached the fourth round at The Championships you have to go back to 1975. Graham Stilwell, who was beaten 2-6, 7-5, 4-6, 2-6 by Arthur Ashe, was the only Briton who reached the last 16 of the 1975 Gentlemen’s Singles, but Wade, Coles, Winnie Wooldridge and Lindsey Beaven all made the fourth round of the ladies’ event. 

Wade, who was the only British winner at that stage, beat Rosie Casals 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 but went on to lose to Cawley in the quarter-finals. Coles was beaten 2-6, 2-6 by Margaret Court, having had the misfortune to meet the great Australian in her only previous appearance in the fourth round two years earlier. Wooldridge, who had reached the quarter-finals in 1970 and 1971, went down 7-9, 3-6 to Betty Stove, while Beaven, who had also lost in the fourth round in 1971, lost 2-6, 4-6 to Chris Evert.

How long before at least three home players again reach the last 16 in singles at The Championships? Since 1999, Henman (five times), Rusedski (twice), Murray (10 times) and Laura Robson (once) have been the only Britons to make the fourth round. However, with the current wave of British players enjoying such success, home fans might not have to wait too long to enjoy such a moment again.
