Novak Djokovic was all smiles on a perfect day by the seaside that featured news of a surprise addition to his coaching team as well as his 68th singles title.

The world No.4 comfortably beat Frenchman Gael Monfils to win the Aegon International in Eastbourne shortly before revealing that former world No.7 Mario Ancic will be alongside him when he tries to win a fourth Wimbledon title.

Djokovic had raised eyebrows by adding Eastbourne to his schedule but a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Monfils in an hour and 16 minutes wrapped up a five day-period in which he failed to drop a set.

“It was a great week,” said Djokovic, who begins his Wimbledon fortnight against Slovak Martin Klizan on Tuesday. “Looking back on the decision-making process and whether or not I should come here, now it feels like it was a good decision.

“On and off the court I was greeted, I was respected. And so, for me, it was just a phenomenal experience that I will definitely take with me to Wimbledon.”

Having confirmed that ‘super coach’ Andre Agassi will join him in SW19 on Sunday, Djokovic also revealed that former Wimbledon semi-finalist Ancic will join his team for the grass court season – and potentially beyond.

“You know, Mario was the perfect guy,” said Djokovic. “He was definitely on top of my list. And Andre agrees, as well.

“We have talked, obviously with Andre first, and we have made a conclusion that we need someone, you know, next to Andre that is going to be maybe more frequently with me and more often on the small tournaments or maybe some practice weeks and so forth.

“We don't have, Mario and I, any long-term commitment. He was pre-scheduled to be in London for his own commitments, so he's going to use the opportunity to be with me. So whether we're going to build from there a long-term relationship or not, we'll see.”

Djokovic will travel to London hoping to land his 13th Grand Slam title. Despite now having two trophies to his name in 2017 – he also won in Doha in January – the challenge will be to raise his game against the world’s best, something he has struggled to do since winning his last big trophy, a Masters 1000 title in Toronto last summer.

The 30-year-old says the time he has spent on the Devonshire Park turf over the last week, however, leaves he and Agassi with the feeling that his tennis is improving day by day.

“He was mentioning what I also felt, that he has noticed that my game has kind of raised the level and quality of tennis, is going in the right direction every match,” the Serb said. “The competitive spirit and fighting spirit was there.”
