It’s been almost a year since he lost in the Wimbledon final, but Milos Raonic is still coming to terms with his defeat to Andy Murray.
“I look back on it as obviously the best moment I’ve had in tennis so far, but also the one that I wish was different more than any other moment in tennis as well,” Raonic said.
“So there is a lot of mixed emotions, but when I really have the time to be honest with myself, look back at it and dig through the hurt and emotions on the surface, it’s the greatest moment I’ve had so far.”
The 26-year-old Canadian hasn’t had an easy year since a 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(2) defeat to the Scot on a blustery afternoon on Centre Court last July.
After losing in the second round of the US Open to American qualifier Ryan Harrison because of cramp, Raonic withdrew from the China Open in October with a partial ligament tear.
Having finished the best season of his life at a career-high No.3, Raonic added 1996 Wimbledon winner Richard Krajicek to his team in December to help him achieve his goals at the majors.
But 2017 has been just as frustrating with his ranking dropping to No.7 after missing chunks of the season with a hamstring injury.
After losing to Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta in the fourth round at Roland Garros, Raonic announced he was splitting from Krajicek after barely six months together.
His co-operation with his new coach, former doubles player Mark Knowles of the Bahamas, didn’t get off to a good start after he lost in the first round at Queen’s Club to Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis.
I think I needed to provide a different kind of energy out on the court
The one good thing about his injury misery is that he’s had the opportunity to reflect on losing his first Grand Slam final.
“You have a lot of time because obviously I’ve been hurt,” Raonic said, speaking at the French Open last month. “When you are out there playing constantly, everything turns into one because the obsession, the focus is always the next match.
“But I’ve had some time over the last 11 months to give it a lot of thought. If I was able to put myself into that same situation again, [there are things] that I definitely would do differently.”
His conclusion: show more emotion on the court.
“I felt like I stayed within myself too much,” he said. “I think I needed to provide a different kind of energy out on the court. Put it out more rather than keep it inside of myself and not have this boiled-up amount of energy, but also some kind of nervous energy that I never got out of myself throughout that match.”
