Garcia stages another comeback

Caroline Garcia continued her stunning end to the season by producing another magnificent escape act to beat Caroline Wozniacki 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 and reach the semi-finals in Singapore. 

Having recovered from 3-5 down in the final set of her victory over Elina Svitolina, Garcia was once again forced to go the well against Wozniacki, who began proceedings right where she left off against Simona Halep, registering her third bagel set in as many as matches, with this one taking just 22 minutes.

The Dane, whose exemplary defense has been ultra-effective this week, made just one unforced error in the opener, and it appeared that Garcia - who won back to back tournaments in the lead up to Singapore - was finally running out of steam.

But as has become customary for her recently, Garcia rallied, choosing her opportunities to attack more wisely, and in the fifth game of the second set she became the first player this week to break the Wozniacki serve. Meanwhile, the Dane's shots had begun to lose their depth and accuracy, and Garcia pulled away to force a decider.

Yet it was Wozniacki who made the faster start in the third set, securing a break of serve in the third game. Garcia forged two break back points soon after, but failed to convert and once again found herself a game away from defeat at 3-5 down.

But adversity continues to inspire the Frenchwoman, and she reeled off the next four games - nervelessly saving three break points at 5-5 in the process - to clinch a remarkable comeback victory.

Svitolina eliminates Halep

Elina Svitolina ended her debut WTA Finals campaign with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Simona Halep, sending the world No.1 crashing out of the tournament in the process. 

Having made no secret of her disappointment following her defeat to Garcia, one might have forgiven the already-eliminated Svitolina for a flat showing against Halep.

Yet the Ukrainian played with nothing to lose throughout, leaving no part of the court uncovered as she registered her third victory over Halep this year.

While Halep ended with 22 winners to 19 unforced errors, Svitolina was more proficient at taking her chances, converting three of her five break points.

"I had nothing to lose, and I was playing for my fans and for the people who were supporting me during all this week," said Svitolina.

"I had very good support, lots of people with Ukrainian flags - it does not always happen, [people] screaming and cheering for me."

For Halep, defeat meant elimination at the round robin stage of the WTA Finals for the third straight year, and could see the year-end No.1 ranking slip away should Pliskova win the title.

"I'm in the same position like Karolina was in Wimbledon," said Halep.

"I will just wait. I'm not thinking about being No.1. I'm telling the truth. I will wait and we will see who is going to finish."

Meanwhile, Garcia qualified as group winner ahead of Wozniacki, with the pair scheduled to face Williams and Pliskova respectively in the semi-finals.
