Armchair Tennis is an ongoing project that began with 16 memories recorded in February 2017.
Armchair tennis demonstrates that you don’t need to be at the side of a tennis court to be a passionate Wimbledon fan. It gives us so many wonderful insights into how and where people first remember a Wimbledon broadcast. The 16 people who began this project are all local to the London Boroughs of Merton and Wandsworth, they come to us through the Ethnic Minority Centre and Attic Theatre Company’s Going for a Song group and they have generously shared their first memories of Wimbledon with us.
We have recorded stories of radios on packed trains in Calcutta, dangerously distracted wallpapering, frustrated viewers of state controlled television, fights over who should leave the sofa and get the snacks, beach holidays, praying for rain, black and white television, disbelief at the true colour of colour television and many more besides.
Broadcasting from Wimbledon, whether on the radio or television has reached a hugely diverse audience around the globe and Armchair Tennis is here to celebrate this.
A selection of Armchair Tennis memories are available to listen to below. To explore more memories, please visit the Armchair Tennis Audioboom channel.
