Water is vital to Wimbledon. It keeps our grass courts maintained and the competitors hydrated.
Unfortunately, one in three people around the world don’t have access to clean water. This is why the Wimbledon Foundation is partnering with WaterAid.
We want to help WaterAid in its mission to ensure everyone has access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene by 2030.
The Wimbledon Foundation is donating £100,000 annually to WaterAid for three years to help support three wide-ranging projects in Malawi, Ethiopia and Nepal. These projects will help to create better health for more than 125,000 people.
In Malawi, 75% of health care facilities still do not have access to clean water and 63% have no access to toilets. This project aims to reduce maternal and new-born mortality through access to water, sanitation and hygiene at health centres and in the community.
The Wimbledon Foundation will be helping WaterAid to:
- Reach 27,300 mothers and their families with clean waterConstruct 16 boreholes in health units and 16 communities
- Ensure health units have toilets, bath shelters, incinerators for waste and refuse pits
- Train 185 health care professionals on good hygiene and reach more than 14,000 people with good hygiene messages.
Six in 10 Ethiopians do not have access to clean water and only 23% of health care facilities in rural areas have access to clean water. This project focuses on the rural district of Burie where only 13% of health care facilities have a clean water supply and just 4% have hand-washing facilities.
The Wimbledon Foundation will be helping WaterAid to:
- Provide clean water, sanitation and hygiene at 10 schools and four health centres helping thousands of children and their families for years to come
- Reach 47,000 people with access to safe water through public wells, boreholes and water points
- Provide access to a toilet for everyone in 15 villages.
While water access is high in the Siraha District of Nepal, access for marginalised groups such as Dalits is much lower and a lack of toilets means a high prevalence of water-related diseases.
The Wimbledon Foundation will be helping WaterAid to:
- Provide access to clean water for more than 9,000 people
- Provide access to decent toilets for more than 30,000 people helping to improve the health of women and their families
- Help empower 600 Dalit women to regain a significant amount of time in their daily lives
- Help households practice good hygiene.
