COME BACK FOR LIVE SCORES & LIVE BLOG FROM 26 JUNE
From my vantage point in the room I share with the weather forecasters, I can cast an eye over the profusion of hats, protection against whatever the elements can chuck at us.
The likelihood of that including a late afternoon burst of showers is something the forecast team has been preparing for since they arrived on Tuesday morning, ever vigilant in the anticipation of precipitation.
The Championships need to run like clockwork and any interruption to play on the 19 courts without a roof has to have a contingency plan.
Thankfully, the all-British men’s singles derby of Andy Murray against Liam Broady had no sooner wrapped up – with Murray going through in three sets - on Centre Court when its roof had to come on.
This kind of June day out can be hard to plan for, let alone set out in without being loaded down with sun blocks, umbrellas, pullovers, sun visors, waterproofs, sandals, flats, wellies…
But, for now, the millinery parade of boaters, panamas, trilbies, sombreros, baseball caps and the odd knotted handkerchief flowing below on St Mary’s Walk has given way to macs and, in one enterprising case, a man improvising magnificently with various plastic shopping bags. At 5p a bag, that’s really very good value.
For me, in spite of the summer rain, there’s been a more relaxed feel after the first day bustle and sense of expectation.
We’ve had a few visitors to our eyrie including Anna Renton, the curator of the museum, and Cathy Jones, who is directing the official Wimbledon Championships film, having done so for the past 15 years.
This year’s theme is ‘crowds’ and in it you’ll get anecdotes from previous champions who share their stories of triumph and bitter-sweet disappointment with fans on Centre Court.
