Storylines and stats from Day 2
Andy Murray, Serena Williams and Juan Martin del Potro provided the talking points on Tuesday READ MORE

After an uninterrupted day’s play on Monday, Tuesday’s action was cut short by rain around 5pm – but that didn’t stop a number of players in the top half of the ladies’ draw and bottom half of the men’s moving into round two.

Former champion and No.2 seed Andy Murray was under the spotlight on Day 2 when he got past fellow Briton Liam Broady in straight sets on Centre Court.

And Murray followed defending champion Serena Williams’ entrance to The Championships 2016 when she proved too strong for qualifier Amra Sadikovic.

Elsewhere, Juan Martin del Potro made a significant step on his long load to recovery from wrist surgery, playing – and winning – his first Grand Slam match for two and a half years.
Number crunching

  • There were wins for Murray, No.4 seed Stan Wawrinka, Nick Kyrgios, Richard Gasquet, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Serena, Roberta Vinci and Svetlana Kuznetsova
  • Murray led the way with the most mentions on social media on Tuesday with his name appearing on 7,454 occasions. Serena (4,488 mentions) is the first woman to break into the top 3 of those players at Wimbledon
  • Not a single seed lost on Day 2 – Frenchman Benoit Paire came the closest to falling but came through 10-8 in the fifth against Croatia’s Franko Skugor
  • Serena moved to a 63-1 win-loss record in Grand Slam first-round matches. Her only defeat came against Virginie Razzano at Roland Garros in 2012. She has won 80 of her 90 singles matches at Wimbledon
  • Murray v Broady was the first all-British Grand Slam meeting since the 2006 US Open – and the first at Wimbledon since 2001
  • Gasquet and Aljaz Bedene produced the longest rally of the day – 28 strokes in the 10th game of the second set during Gasquet’s straight sets win
  • Gilles Muller survived the longest match of the tournament so far – he saved four match points to beat Santiago Giraldo 15-13 in the fifth after four hours 15 minutes
  • And Muller leads the way in aces hit so far – a whopping 51 from the big man from Luxembourg during that win over Giraldo
  • Tsonga is chasing tennis history at Wimbledon. His 101st Grand Slam match win on Tuesday moved him within touching distance of fellow Frenchmen Jean Borotra (103 wins) and Henri Cochet (102)
